Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Wild wasted no time making a statement Sunday night, racing to a 5-0 lead before cruising to a dominant 6-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at Grand Casino Arena.
In a game that showcased the team’s offensive firepower and new defensive acquisition, the Wild improved their Central Division standing and sent a message to the rest of the league.
Superstar winger Kirill Kaprizov led the charge with a two-goal performance, while captain Jared Spurgeon, Ryan Hartman, Matt Boldy, and newly acquired defenseman Quinn Hughes all found the back of the net in the lopsided affair. The victory keeps Minnesota firmly in third place in the Central Division with 43 points.
The Wild came out flying from the opening faceoff, overwhelming a struggling Bruins team that had no answer for Minnesota’s speed and
Perhaps most impressive was the debut performance of Quinn Hughes, who scored in his first game wearing Wild colors. The 26-year-old defenseman, acquired from Vancouver in a blockbuster trade on Friday, wasted no time proving his worth to his new team. Hughes’ offensive instincts and puck-moving ability were evident throughout the contest, giving Minnesota fans a glimpse of what the two-time All-Star can bring to their playoff push.
The acquisition cost the Wild dearly in terms of assets, as they sent defenseman Zeev Buium, center Marco Rossi, forward Liam Ohgren, and a first-round draft pick to the Canucks. However, Hughes’ immediate production and his impressive statistics from Vancouver-two goals and 21 assists in just 26 games this season-suggest the Wild may have landed the difference-maker they need for a deep postseason run.
The Wild won’t have much time to celebrate as they return to action Tuesday night when they host the Washington Capitals at Grand Casino Arena. With momentum on their side and Hughes settling into his new surroundings, Minnesota will look to build on Sunday’s dominant performance and continue climbing the Central Division standings.
For a team with legitimate playoff aspirations, the combination of Kaprizov’s elite scoring, the addition of Hughes’ two-way play, and the overall depth demonstrated in Sunday’s victory paints an encouraging picture as the season progresses. Wild fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their team’s championship potential.
