Becker County residents will have the chance to recycle old mattresses at no cost during a special four-day event next month. The Becker County Landfill is hosting a FREE mattress recycling event December 5th through 8th, 2025, with an additional collection day on December 6th at the Osage Landfill.
The landfill is encouraging residents to bring in unwanted mattresses and box springs, but there are a few requirements. Items must be recyclable—that means no wet materials, no mold, and no bed bugs. Each household will be limited to two units, which can be any combination of mattresses or box springs.
Mattresses are notoriously difficult for landfills to accept due to their bulk, but Becker County is able to offer this event through its ongoing partnership with Better Futures Minnesota. The organization dismantles mattresses piece by piece, breaking them down into materials that can be more easily managed and kept out of the landfill.
Typically, disposing of a mattress can cost residents up to $23 per unit, while recycling normally runs up to $15 each. With the free event, Becker County officials say residents could save as much as $30 by recycling two units at no charge.
