Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins introduced Derek Shelton as their new manager during a press conference on Tuesday, marking the veteran skipper’s return to Major League Baseball after a six-month absence.
Shelton, who was dismissed by the Pittsburgh Pirates early in the 2025 season, said his time away from the game provided valuable perspective that will help him succeed with the Twins.
The 54-year-old manager replaces Rocco Baldelli, who was fired by the Twins in September after five seasons at the helm. Baldelli led Minnesota to three playoff appearances during his tenure but was let go after disappointing 2024 and 2025 seasons.
The Twins are hoping Shelton’s experience and renewed perspective will help guide the franchise back to postseason contention. He brings a track record of player development from his time with Pittsburgh and previous coaching roles with the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, and Cleveland Indians.
