The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has announced more than $20.7 million in Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) grants across Greater Minnesota — including major awards for the communities of Elizabeth and Barnesville.
The city of Elizabeth will receive $600,000 to fund public facility improvements to the community’s water main system, addressing vital infrastructure needs that support both residents and local businesses.
Meanwhile, Barnesville was awarded $1.19 million to support the rehabilitation of 21 owner-occupied homes and 13 commercial buildings, a project that will enhance both housing quality and downtown vitality.
“Funding through DEED’s Small Cities Development Program enables cities to undertake projects that promote economic vitality and quality of life in their communities,” said DEED Commissioner Matt Varilek. “These grants ensure all Minnesotans feel the benefits of economic development and have a safe, healthy community and home, regardless of where they live.”
The SCDP, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, assists smaller cities and counties with housing, infrastructure, and commercial rehabilitation projects—primarily in areas serving low- and moderate-income residents.
This year’s round of funding supports projects in 33 Greater Minnesota cities and counties, helping to rehabilitate nearly 300 properties statewide.
