Organics Recycling Program Now Underway in Becker County

By Dave Bishop Oct 15, 2025 | 4:35 PM

Becker County’s new organics recycling program has officially begun, giving residents a simple way to turn food scraps into compost instead of waste.

Kitchen collection containers are still available for pickup at the Becker County Courthouse (third floor zoning office) and at the county landfill. Participants can collect their food scraps and other accepted items at home, then bring them to one of the county’s public drop-off sites.

Accepted materials include food scraps (a small amount of bones, such as from a ham or ribs, are okay), food-soiled paper, and BPI-certified compostable foodware. Items not accepted include dryer lint, large bones, or any kind of animal carcass.

Replacement compostable bags can be purchased online through Amazon, Green Paper Products, or Cedar Grove, and locally at Cwikla Ace Hardware in Detroit Lakes. County officials remind participants to use only paper or certified compostable bags—no plastic or garbage bags.
