Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins saw their hopes for a series victory slip away in the final inning, dropping a closely contested 4-3 decision to the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim on Wednesday night.
The loss completed a disappointing rubber match that leaves the Twins still searching for consistency as the season winds down.
What appeared destined for extra innings took a dramatic turn in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the game knotted at 3-3, Angel’s superstar Mike Trout came through in the clutch, delivering a sacrifice fly off Twins reliever Cole Sands to score what would prove to be the winning run.
The go-ahead RBI marked another frustrating moment for Sands, who was saddled with his fourth loss in relief this season. The right-hander has struggled in high-leverage situations, and Wednesday’s outcome only added to the bullpen concerns that have plagued Minnesota throughout the campaign.
Despite the disappointing result, the Twins showed fight throughout the contest. Byron Buxton provided a spark with a solo home run, continuing his solid offensive production when healthy. The veteran outfielder’s power stroke remains one of the few consistent bright spots in what has been a challenging season.
The Twins will look to bounce back when they return home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
