State Patrol Reports Safer WE Fest Weekend with Fewer Crashes and DWI Arrests

Detroit Lakes — The Minnesota State Patrol says this year’s WE Fest traffic enforcement effort was busy but largely safe, with only two reported crashes in the area during the event, both resulting in property damage only. Extra troopers were on duty from Tuesday, August 5, through Sunday, August 10, to provide enforcement and traffic control in and around Detroit Lakes.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow credited shuttle services, rideshare options, and sober ride programs for helping reduce impaired driving. “We always want to see that everyone gets to and from the event safely,” Grabow said.

Compared to 2024, this year’s enforcement numbers show an increase in traffic stops and speeding violations, but a sharp drop in DWI arrests. In 2025, troopers conducted 1,155 traffic stops — up from 1,065 last year — and issued 511 speeding citations and warnings, compared to 440 in 2024. Seat belt violations stayed consistent at 119, while child restraint violations were reported at 11.

DWI arrests saw a significant decline, from 23 last year to 9 in 2025. Minor consumption citations also fell from 21 to 14. Other arrests, including those for warrants, dropped from 10 to 3.

Troopers also cited 59 drivers for violating Minnesota’s hands-free cellphone law, up from 48 the year before. License-related offenses — including driving after revocation, suspension, or cancellation — totaled 21, compared to 27 in 2024.

Authorities say the numbers suggest more attendees are making safe transportation choices, even as traffic enforcement remains steady.
