Detroit Lakes, MN — Becker County is inviting the public to help shape the future of the Heartland Trail as part of a newly launched routing study. The study focuses on extending the trail from Dunton Locks County Park to Bucks Mill, and county officials are encouraging residents, visitors, and trail users to share their input on potential routes.
The goal of the study is to evaluate various corridor options for the trail extension while incorporating community feedback to ensure the final design meets public needs. An interactive website has been created where users can explore the proposed area, drop comment pins, and offer suggestions on possible trail alignments.
“Community involvement is critical to making sure this project reflects what people want and need,” said Mitch Lundeen, a county official overseeing the study. “We’re hoping to hear from as many voices as possible.”
For those who prefer in-person engagement, an open house is planned for the end of August. The session will offer another chance for the public to ask questions and provide feedback directly to planners and county staff.
The county emphasizes that the feedback will help guide planning decisions and ensure the trail benefits the entire community.
To participate and leave feedback, residents are encouraged to visit the project site:
