Detroit Lakes, MN — The city of Detroit Lakes is gearing up for one of its most cherished summer traditions as the 89th Northwest Water Carnival returns with ten days of fun, entertainment, and community spirit beginning Friday, July 11.
Organized by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, this year’s carnival promises a packed schedule of events for all ages, starting with the popular “Kegs and Eggs” event at 5 a.m. Friday at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion. Attendees can enjoy wood-fired breakfast pizza while Brooks Brothers keep the kegs flowing. A special thanks was given to Maelstrom Electric for helping power the kickoff and providing the Tapper Trailer.
Later that evening, the streets in front of Hub 41 will be closed at 4 p.m. for the official Kickoff Party featuring the live music of Some Blankety Cover Band (SBCB). The show is 18+, doors open at 6 p.m., and cover is $10 at the gate.
Saturday brings a brand-new addition to the carnival lineup: the Mad Summer Party at Soo Pass Ranch. The outdoor concert event begins at 4 p.m., with performances by Back for More, Buckcherry, and the legendary Blue Öyster Cult. Organizers are encouraging fans to bring cowbells and make some noise—literally.
“There’s a ton of excitement around this year’s concert,” said April from the DL Jaycees. “If you want to enjoy the show for free, we’re still looking for volunteers. It’s a great way to get involved and be part of the action.”
Sunday, July 13 is Family Day, sponsored by Laker Prep, featuring a wide range of family-friendly activities. Highlights include a community picnic (sponsored by Northwest Bank), the always-popular plunge event (sponsored by Becker Pet and Garden), and the creative Lego contest (sponsored by Prairie Bricks).
The Jaycees emphasized the importance of community support in making the Water Carnival a success. “We really want to thank all our sponsors for stepping up,” said Tyler from the organizing committee. “And we’re still welcoming volunteers and new members—there’s a role for everyone.”
Anyone interested in volunteering or joining the Jaycees can stop by the Pavilion or visit dlgjaycees.com. “We just got the keys today,” April added, “and we’ll be there getting everything ready for an incredible ten days.”
