A twenty-six-year-old man from Waubun is now facing multiple vehicular homicide charges after a motorcycle crash on County Road 56, east of County Road 117, near Toad Lake. On May 26th at around 8:20 the Becker County Sherrif’s Office received a 911 call about a single motorcycle crash; they found one person alert and a 23-year-old woman lying in the swamp. The victim was unconscious and appeared to be vomiting. She was flown to Fargo to receive medical attention.
A deputy spoke to the person who initially called to report the accident. He said he heard the crash and spoke to the man who said he was driving the motorcycle, later identified as Jacob Riggle.
When an officer talked to Riggle, he told the officer that he “did not know” if he was driving, according to court documents. The officer noted that he could smell the odor of alcohol and says that Riggle had bloodshot eyes. Court documents say that Riggle admitted drinking, but did not know where he was driving from and did not know where he was drinking at. Documents say a preliminary breath test indicated that Riggle had a BAC of .138. He was taken to the emergency room. Riggle later told officials that the motorcycle was his and he had purchased it about a week before the crash.
On June 13, law enforcement was informed that the victim had died from her injuries. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office determined that the victim’s cause of death was complications from head injuries sustained in the motorcycle crash.
Riggle is now being charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, one for operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08 or higher, and another for operating a vehicle with negligence while under the influence of alcohol.
