Detroit Lakes City Council Votes Not to Fly the State Flag

One of the hotly debated topics at Tuesday’s Detroit Lakes City Council meeting was the decision to fly the new state of Minnesota flag.

The council recently decided to change from displaying the old flag to the new one. Several Detroit Lakes residents were not in favor of the change and brought it to the council. Mayor Matt Brenk described Tuesdays meeting as a “full house. In the end, the council voted not to fly either flag.

Mayor Brenk who cast the tie breaking vote said; “We had probably half the people there that were looking to have the new Minnesota flag continue to fly. There were probably half that wanted the old flag to fly. Ultimately the decision that was made last night was the city’s not going to fly either flag moving forward. We’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months and so this is probably, I hate to say it, probably the best compromise at this point.”
