The Detroit Lakes City Beach, the mile long stretch from the Pavilion to the Legion, is tentatively scheduled to be treated for Swimmer’s itch on June 9th.

This will not guarantee that the swimmer’s itch will be eliminated. The City is asking the public to please use caution when swimming.

Swimmer’s itch is a temporary skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites in fresh water.

These parasites, released from infected snails, can burrow into a swimmer’s skin, leading to an itchy, tingling, or burning sensation.

The swimmers itch can be treated by using corticosteroid creams, anti-itch locations, and oral antihistamines.

To avoid swimmer’s itch risk it’s best to avoid shallow water, shower immediately after leaving the water, and towel dry immediately after swimming.
