Pelican River Watershed District Will Conduct an AIS Control Project Next Week

The Pelican River Watershed District will be conducting an aquatic invasive species control project involving herbicide treatments of Curly-leaf pondweed and Flowering Rush infestations for lakes North Floyd, Big and Little Detroit, Curfman, Sallie, Melissa, and Muskrat.

Weather permitting PLM Lake and Land management will be doing the treatments on Wednesday, May 21st.

Terra Guetter, from PRWSD talks about the importance of maintaining a heathy ecosystem. “When those invasive species take over some of these areas, we don’t have a healthy ecosystem in the lake anymore. After we treated the flowering rush, all the spawning beds came back. I mean I heard time and time again. And if I had any do-over on our research, I would have liked to have shown how all those spawning beds came back, because the gravel was back again versus being a swamp with a flowering rush. So, I know we had a positive impact in our fisheries.”

There are a few warnings for lake water usage after the treatment.

Do not irrigate with water from the treated areas:

  • Food crops – 5 days
  • Ornamental plants – 3 days
  • Turf grass – 3 days

There are no label restrictions from the treated area for swimming (MN DNR recommends 1 day), drinking water, domestic uses, fish consumption, or livestock watering.
