Detroit Lakes, MN – Detroit Lakes is home to five giant trolls, three magic portals, and one elusive golden rabbit, all huge statues made of hundreds of tons of trash.
Danish recycling artist Thomas Dambo has built over 130 trolls worldwide as permanent, themed art installations focusing on environmental awareness. He says, “Ever since I was a kid, I love trash… Trash is the perfect building block for creating and being creative.”
These trolls were built from recycled wood, tree branches, and stones—all scrap from Highway 34 construction and local donations—crafted with help from hundreds of Minnesota volunteers. You can watch MNN’s troll tour above.
