Otter Tail County, MN (KDLM) – During Child Foster Care Month, Otter Tail County is asking individuals and families to consider becoming foster parents. With the number of children needing safe, stable homes increasing, there is a need for caring foster families.

“Otter Tail County prioritizes placing children with relatives whenever possible; family restoration is our ultimate goal,” shared Stephanie Olson, Human Services Supervisor. “However, there are times when this is not an option, and we look to our community to help provide safe homes for children.”

The need for foster families in Otter Tail County spans all ages, from infants to teenagers. Otter Tail County Public Information Officer Shannon Terry says the county provides the necessary licensing process, resources, and ongoing support to ensure foster parents feel prepared and confident in their role.

“Love them and let them go? Yes, it sounds hard, and it is,” shared a foster mom. “Maybe it’s not for everyone, but does it take a special kind of superhuman quality? I don’t think so. Everyone, if they look deep enough will see that they too can find room to love another child for a little while.”

Even if you cannot become a foster parent, you can help foster families in your community in many ways. You can provide used toys and books, help with meals, or offer support with daily tasks.

Terry says an Otter Tail County social worker will guide you through the process, ensuring you have the tools and support needed. Information about the application process and resources for foster families can help you get started by contacting Otter Tail County at 218-998-8150 or visiting ottertailcounty.gov and searching Child Foster Care.
