Deputies from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office were among several local law enforcement agencies who took part in a two-day Lakes Area SWAT training, hosted by the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office.
The training focused on a critical skill for patrol officers—clearing rooms during high-risk calls. Officers moved through four interactive stations set up inside the Hubbard County Sheriff’s facility, running through real-time scenarios designed to sharpen communication, safety, and decision-making under pressure.
SWAT Commander Sergeant Tony Petrie, along with Team Leaders Chad Olson, Dan May, and Troy Wagsness, led the sessions. Alongside Becker County deputies, participants included teams from the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office, Wadena Police, and Staples Police.
“These regional trainings are more than skill builders—they’re relationship builders,” said a Becker County official. “Knowing how each other moves and communicates can be the difference between life and death in a real operation.”
The Lakes Area SWAT Team routinely responds to calls across Becker, Otter Tail, Wadena, and Hubbard Counties, assisting with everything from warrant service to active threats. This joint training helps ensure readiness and strong collaboration across departments.
The training in Hubbard County is one of several coordinated sessions planned throughout the year to strengthen officer readiness and public safety across the Lakes Area.
