A powerful April snowstorm swept through the region overnight, triggering a snow emergency in Detroit Lakes, multiple school closings, and dangerous travel conditions across west-central Minnesota.
The City of Detroit Lakes issued a snow emergency beginning Wednesday, April 2 at 12:01 a.m. During the emergency, parking is prohibited on any city street until the street is completely cleared. City officials are asking landlords to help tenants find alternative parking, and warning that towing will be enforced.
“The cost and expense of towing and impounding are the responsibility of the vehicle owner,” the city posted on Facebook.
The National Weather Service placed the region under a Winter Storm Warning Tuesday, forecasting 6 to 8 inches of snow, with rates of up to 2 inches per hour at times. The snow fell heavy overnight, causing slick roads and reduced visibility. As of this morning, DL Police say there have been no local crashes or emergencies reported, but they urge drivers to stay alert on icy roads.
The storm has also led to adjusted school schedules across the region:
• Detroit Lakes Public Schools: Flex/E-Learning Day
• Perham-Dent Schools: E-Learning Day
• Pelican Rapids: Closed
• Underwood: Flexible Learning Day
• Frazee-Vergas: Closed E-Learning Day
You can find a full list of closings and delays on our website.
Elsewhere, MnDOT reports that roads across Becker, Otter Tail, and Wadena counties are partially covered with snow and ice this morning. Drivers are reminded to slow down and give extra space to snowplows and other vehicles.
