The Minnesota DNR is sharing two springtime updates: one about a returning pair of peregrine falcons on their live FalconCam, and the other about a statewide call for private woodland owners to help grow Minnesota’s forest inventory.

FalconCam Nest Watch Begins
The popular DNR FalconCam, located in downtown St. Paul, is once again streaming live as a returning pair of peregrine falcons prepares to nest.
The same female and male—now 12 and 16 years old—have been spotted creating a “scrape” in the gravel. The female originally fledged from St. Cloud and has used this box since 2016. The male, from Gary, Indiana, returned last year.
“We hope the FalconCam generates appreciation of this fascinating species of special concern,” said DNR Wildlife Engagement Supervisor Jessica Ruthenberg. “Last year, this pair fledged two chicks. We’re hopeful they’ll nest again soon.”
The first egg could appear in early April. You can watch live and sign up for updates at mndnr.gov/falconcam.

Forest Inventory Needs Otter Tail Woodland Owners
Meanwhile, the DNR is encouraging private woodland owners in Otter Tail County and other parts of Minnesota to enroll in the state’s forest inventory program.
Since launching in January 2024, nearly 1,000 landowners have signed up—but areas like Otter Tail, Todd, and Clearwater counties are still underrepresented.
“Private landowners are essential to getting a full picture of Minnesota’s forests,” said DNR scientist Keb Guralski. The inventory data helps track forest health, wildfire risk, and habitat conditions.
Landowners who enroll work with foresters to collect data and receive a free high-resolution map and forest health report.
If you have at least two acres of forested land, you can learn more and sign up at mndnr.gov/forestry.
