SCAM ALERT: Fake MnDOT Toll Text Circulating in Minnesota

By Trish Johnson Mar 27, 2025 | 5:48 AM

Area residents are reporting a new scam text message falsely claiming to be from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). The message threatens legal action over an unpaid toll and urges recipients to click a suspicious link.
The message reads:
“MNDOT Final Reminder: You have an outstanding toll. Your toll account balance is outstanding… You will be penalized or subject to legal action.”
It includes a link to a non-official MnDOT web address and instructs users to reply to the text and reopen it to activate the link—classic signs of a phishing attempt designed to steal personal or financial information.
📣 Here’s what you should know:
• MnDOT does NOT collect toll payments via text.
• Official toll roads in Minnesota are limited and are managed through authorized state systems like E-ZPass, not random third-party links.
• MnDOT will never ask for payment via unsolicited texts or request personal data this way.
🚫 If you receive this message:
• Do not click the link.
• Do not reply.
• Report it as junk or phishing through your phone’s messaging system.
• If you’re ever in doubt, contact MnDOT directly at www.dot.state.mn.us or by phone.
Stay alert, especially with scams becoming more targeted and sophisticated. Share this warning with friends and neighbors—especially seniors—who may be more vulnerable to these tactics.
