Governor Tim Walz signed two key initiatives into action this week—one aimed at supporting small farmers, and another focused on preventing acts of targeted violence across Minnesota.
Supporting Small Grain Buyers
On Monday, Governor Walz signed bipartisan legislation amending financial reporting requirements for grain buyers. The change is expected to lower annual compliance costs for small grain businesses while ensuring timely and transparent reporting.
“Prosperity for our small farmers is not a partisan issue,” said Governor Walz. “I’m glad to see legislators come together in a bipartisan way to get this done.”
The move is part of the administration’s broader push to reduce costs and improve opportunities for rural communities and family-run ag businesses.
Preventing Targeted Violence Statewide
On Thursday, the Governor also announced a new statewide strategy to prevent targeted violence in schools, workplaces, and public spaces.
The plan, developed by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), draws on a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement, mental health experts, educators, and community leaders. It emphasizes evidence-based methods to identify and manage potential threats—while protecting privacy rights and civil liberties.
“There is no room for targeted violence in our communities,” said Walz. “We are doubling down on our work to prevent it before it happens.”
More details on both initiatives are available through the Governor’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
