Minnesota DNR Warns of Rapidly Changing Ice Conditions

With warmer temperatures, rain, and wind, ice conditions across Minnesota are deteriorating quickly, and the DNR is urging caution for anyone still heading out onto lakes.
Over the past weekend, DNR conservation officers responded to multiple ice rescues, including three incidents where people fell through the ice and several reports of vehicles breaking through.
“The ice in many areas has degraded significantly in recent days, bringing a quick end to what had been a good ice season,” said Nicole Biagi, DNR Enforcement ice safety coordinator.
Ice Safety Tips from the DNR:
• Spring ice is weaker than it looks. Even if it appears thick, warming temperatures mean it can no longer support as much weight.
• The ice you walk on in the morning may not be safe by afternoon. Conditions change rapidly with sun exposure.
• Wear a life jacket or float coat and carry ice picks. Falling into frigid water can cause hyperventilation and loss of strength, even for strong swimmers.
• Never go alone and always tell someone your plans. Having a buddy and a rescue plan could save your life.
Boaters are already appearing on open water in some parts of the state, signaling the end of the ice fishing season in many areas. The DNR recommends checking ice thickness frequently and following their safety guidelines before heading out.
