Minnesota Pilot Program Tests New Drug-Impaired Driving Screening Tools

Mar 19, 2025 | 6:19 AM

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety just completed a pilot project testing two oral fluid screening devices, which can detect recent drug use in drivers—similar to a breathalyzer for alcohol.
The devices detected drugs in 87% of tests, and in more than 60% of cases, multiple substances were present. Officials say the most commonly found substances were cannabis, meth, and amphetamines.
State legislators will now review the results and decide whether to approve these screening tools for statewide use.
