A former West Fargo Hockey Association employee is facing felony theft charges after allegedly stealing $68,000 from the organization.
Steven Lyon, of Moorhead, admitted to taking money from electronic gambling machines when confronted. He was fired immediately and quickly repaid the stolen amount.
The theft was discovered by an association auditor, who flagged discrepancies that led back to Lyon. The case was reported to the North Dakota Gaming Commission, which has now banned Lyon from working in charitable gaming statewide.
Local officials stress the importance of transparency and oversight in nonprofit fundraising, particularly for organizations that rely on community support.
