Authorities in west-central Minnesota are warning residents about dangerous ice conditions after a truck broke through the ice on Lake Victoria near Alexandria.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 45-year-old Mark Herrboldt of Rice drove about 20 feet onto the lake Sunday morning when the front end of his truck broke through the ice.
No injuries were reported, and a towing company was already on scene assisting with vehicle removal by the time deputies arrived.
Officials say ice thickness on the lake varied from several feet to as little as 3.5 inches where the vehicle broke through—far below the DNR-recommended 8-12 inches for vehicle safety.
With warmer temperatures weakening ice statewide, law enforcement urges anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to use extreme caution on all Minnesota lakes.
