A motorist was found dead after their vehicle broke through the ice on Grass Lake, west of Lidgerwood.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were searching for an overdue motorist on Sunday, March 3, when they discovered the vehicle fully submerged in about 12 feet of water.
Investigators believe the driver was heading south across the frozen lake when the ice gave way. The body was recovered from the water, and an underwater search was conducted on the vehicle.
The cause of death is pending autopsy results but is believed to be drowning. The driver’s identity has not been released as authorities notify the family.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lidgerwood Fire Department, Valley Water Rescue, Richland County Water Rescue, and ND Game and Fish.
With rapidly changing ice conditions, officials urge extreme caution on frozen lakes as warm temperatures weaken ice stability.
