Tax season can be stressful, but MAHUBE-OTWA Community Action Partnership is making it easier for area residents by offering free tax preparation services through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
This program provides support for low-income individuals, seniors aged 60 and older, people with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency. The goal is to ensure eligible taxpayers file their returns accurately while maximizing refunds through available credits and deductions.
Lisa Stroschein, Senior Coordinator at MAHUBE-OTWA, encourages eligible residents to take advantage of this service. “Each year, we help clients claim essential tax credits, which brings millions of dollars back into our communities,” Stroschein said.
Who Qualifies?
• In-person assistance is available for those with an adjusted gross income of $67,000 or less.
• Online filing is an option for anyone with an income below $84,000, through TaxSlayer, an IRS-approved filing system.
How to Get Help:
• In-Person Appointments – Call (218) 530-2658 or visit mahube.org to schedule an appointment. Residents must bring Social Security cards for all filers, a photo ID, income documentation (W-2s, 1099s), last year’s tax return (if available), and bank account info for direct deposit refunds.
• Online Filing – Residents preferring to file their own taxes can use TaxSlayer, a free cloud-based tax preparation software available at mahube.org.
This initiative ensures that eligible residents don’t miss out on potential refunds and tax credits that can make a real difference in their financial well-being.
