A Becker County deputy and his K9 partner braved dangerously cold temperatures early Monday morning to track down a wanted suspect suffering from exposure.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies responded around 5:14 a.m. on February 17 to a call about a man pounding on the door of a residence on County Highway 29, near Eagle Lake Road, south of Frazee. Upon arrival, officers learned that the man had fled on foot and had active warrants for 5th-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and trespassing.
Deputy Adam Winter and K9 Rex tracked the suspect through deep snow despite wind chills reaching -45 degrees Fahrenheit. They followed his footprints leading toward the highway, where they found him face down in the snow, unresponsive. Officials say he appeared to be suffering from severe cold exposure.
Deputy Winter called for medical assistance, and the suspect was transported to Essentia-St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes for treatment. After being medically cleared, he was booked into jail on his outstanding warrants.
Sheriff Todd Glander commended Deputy Winter and K9 Rex for their quick response and perseverance in extreme conditions, ensuring the suspect received medical care before being taken into custody.
