Twin Valley Woman Suffers Severe Burns from Electric Blanket, Issues Warning

Feb 13, 2025 | 6:24 AM

A Twin Valley woman is warning others after suffering third-degree burns from an electric blanket she purchased last year.
Leslie Scott says she went to bed with the heated blanket on the night of December 6. The next morning, she noticed her skin was missing from part of her leg.
“I made it to work, pulled up my pants, and saw a blister and missing skin,” Scott said.
Her doctor confirmed third-degree burns on her lower right leg, and she now drives to Fargo weekly for treatment.
Fire Safety Officials Weigh In
The West Fargo Fire Department warns that prolonged exposure to heated blankets can cause serious burns and even fire hazards.
“Falling asleep with them on can be dangerous,” said Darin Underhill, Fire Inspector at West Fargo Fire Department. “Make sure they have room to breathe, and always unplug them when not in use.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters and heating devices account for over a quarter of home fires each year.
Recalled SunBeam Heated Blankets
Scott’s SunBeam heated blanket was not part of the 2023 recall, which affected models sold between 2022 and 2023 due to burn and fire risks. She purchased her blanket in 2024, but she still suffered burns.
Scott’s message? Check your heated blankets for safety risks and don’t assume they’re safe to use.
“I just want others not to get burned as well,” she said.
