The Fargo-Moorhead region is facing a rise in fatal overdoses tied to Xylazine, a powerful veterinary sedative that’s now being found in illegal drug mixtures. Often referred to as the “zombie drug,” Xylazine can cause severe tissue damage, including necrosis, and poses unique dangers because it’s not an opioid—meaning naloxone (Narcan) cannot reverse its effects.
According to Fargo Police, Xylazine was found in 5 of the 17 overdose deaths reported in 2024. Assistant DEA Special Agent Rafael Mattei confirmed that seizures of the drug in the Midwest have increased in the past year.
Addictions counselor Micayla Brown, from Beth’s Place in Moorhead, emphasizes the need for education and preparation. “If we don’t know much about it, we’re going to educate ourselves so that we can educate the community,” Brown said.
Despite Xylazine’s resistance to Narcan, authorities urge the public to still administer it if an overdose is suspected.
Local police and addiction support centers continue working to prevent further overdoses and raise awareness about the risks of contaminated drug supplies.
