Minnesota’s Ken Martin Aims for National Democratic Party Leadership

By Trish Johnson Jan 31, 2025 | 6:31 AM

Minnesota DFL Chair Ken Martin could soon take on a national role as he competes to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The election is set for this Saturday near Washington, D.C.
Martin, who has led the DFL for 14 years, is known for his unbeaten record in statewide elections. He’s emphasizing his success in building a long-term strategy for voter engagement, something he says the national party needs. He’s up against several other candidates, including Wisconsin Democratic Chair Ben Wikler.
Locally, this could matter because a Martin win might bring more national resources and focus to rural areas like Detroit Lakes. Political leaders, including Attorney General Keith Ellison and Governor Tim Walz, support Martin, saying he’s uniquely qualified for the role.
The new DNC chair will play a key role in shaping how the Democratic Party rebuilds after last year’s election losses and prepares for upcoming midterms and the next presidential race.
