A preliminary hearing date has been set for a Detroit Lakes woman charged with felony criminal vehicular homicide. 20-year-old Mariska Kay Nunn will appear in Becker County District Court on February 20th.
Nunn is accused of striking 81-year-old Dean Chadbourne with her vehicle on Randolph Road last September. Chadbourne was out retrieving his mail and later died of his injuries.
Court documents allege Nunn may have been distracted by her phone at the time of the crash.
This tragic case has sparked renewed awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Local organizations, including law enforcement and the Minnesota Safety Council, are working to educate the public on how distractions can quickly lead to life-altering accidents.
