Lawmakers Push to Overturn Lead Ammo and Tackle Ban on Federal Lands

Congress is debating the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act, which aims to reverse a rule banning lead ammunition and tackle in eight national wildlife refuges. The rule impacts over 3 million acres of land and has sparked controversy.
Supporters of the bill argue that banning lead ammo and tackle creates unnecessary financial barriers for hunters and anglers. “Hunting and fishing are a way of life in Minnesota, and I want to ensure it’s accessible for future generations,” a cosponsor said.
Opponents of the bill emphasize the environmental risks of lead contamination, which can harm wildlife and ecosystems. They argue that transitioning to alternatives, though more expensive, is a necessary step for conservation.
The legislation would prohibit the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture from enforcing the rule.
