A Fergus Falls man faces serious charges after a violent altercation and arson incident in Becker County.
Ramsey Louis Kettle, 33, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony second-degree assault and felony first-degree arson.
According to court documents, a Becker County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital on Dec. 12 after receiving an assault report. The victim, a relative of Kettle, described a violent encounter at his Pine Point residence a week earlier, on Dec. 5.
The victim stated that Kettle, who recently moved from Otter Tail County to Becker County, had visited his home twice that night. During the second visit, the victim allowed Kettle inside due to the cold weather. After the two talked and fell asleep, the victim awoke to Kettle attacking him.
The victim reported that Kettle pulled a knife, prompting the victim to grab the blade to defend himself, resulting in severe injuries to his hand. Kettle allegedly attempted to stab the victim and cut his throat, while also biting him multiple times, leaving puncture wounds on his leg, head, and other areas.
In addition to the assault, Kettle reportedly set fire to the victim’s kitchen garbage and stole his phone.
On Dec. 19, Kettle’s bail was set at $150,000 without conditions or $100,000 bond or $10,000 bail with conditions, including no contact with the victim, no firearms or dangerous weapons, and abstention from alcohol and illegal drugs.
Prosecutors filed an intent to seek aggravated sentencing on Dec. 26, citing Kettle’s extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for violent crimes such as felony assault, witness tampering, and threats of violence. The notice states, “This repeated assaultive conduct endangers society,” justifying a potential upward departure in sentencing.
Kettle’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 3 before District Court Judge Gretchen Thilmony.
