The Detroit Lakes area is experiencing dangerously low temperatures, with wind chills nearing -50°F. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning in effect through Tuesday afternoon, January 21, 2025.
The extreme cold has made travel hazardous, with authorities reporting icy roads and reduced visibility. On January 15, Walter Richard Tumberg, a 91-year-old man from New York Mills, was injured in a rollover crash on Highway 10 west of Lake Park. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Tumberg’s vehicle left the roadway in snowy, icy conditions and rolled. He was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s with non-life-threatening injuries.
Residents are being urged to take precautions:
• Limit time outdoors. Frostbite can occur within five minutes in these conditions.
• Dress in layers and cover all exposed skin.
• Check on vulnerable neighbors, children, and pets.
• Prepare vehicles with emergency supplies, including blankets, food, and water, and keep gas tanks full.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly by Tuesday afternoon, with highs near 8°F, but the region remains at risk for frostbite and hypothermia until then.
