After years of delays, the federal REAL ID deadline is finally set to take effect on May 7, 2025, meaning standard driver’s licenses will no longer be enough for certain activities like boarding flights.
What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a federally mandated form of identification designed to enhance security by standardizing identity verification across states. Created by Congress in 2005, REAL ID was intended to improve security in the wake of September 11 but has faced numerous delays in implementation.
A REAL ID or an Enhanced Driver’s License will be required for:
• Boarding domestic flights
• Entering U.S. military bases
• Accessing certain federal buildings
For other activities like driving, voting, and purchasing alcohol or tobacco, standard licenses will still be valid. Alternatively, travelers can use a standard license with a passport or passport card to fly.
An Enhanced Driver’s License is also an option. It provides all the benefits of REAL ID and allows border crossings to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean by land or sea but costs more.
How to Obtain a REAL ID
Minnesota residents can apply for a REAL ID at most DVS centers. However, more documentation is required than for a standard license:
• Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate, passport)
• Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2 form)
• Two documents proving Minnesota residency (e.g., utility bill, income tax return)
• Proof of name changes, if applicable (e.g., court orders, marriage certificate)
Note: Originals are required; no photocopies, laminated, or digital copies will be accepted.
For convenience, residents can pre-apply online before visiting a DVS location. Visit the Minnesota DVS website for more information
