Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State) in Fergus Falls will open two winter art exhibits this week, showcasing collections by artists Ruth Hanson and Mary Jo Wentz, both inspired by nature and personal journeys.
Hanson’s exhibit, titled “Wending through Watercolor Batik (and a few other things)”, will be displayed at the Beck Gallery from January 16 through March 13. Hanson, an accomplished watercolor artist and calligrapher, emphasizes the beauty and peace she hopes her work brings to viewers. A former student of Charles Beck, for whom the gallery is named, Hanson reflects on the impact of her early education in Fergus Falls, saying, “It means a lot to me to have a show in the Beck Gallery.”
Meanwhile, Wentz’s exhibit, “The Fusion of Fiber and Nature,” will feature her felted wool creations and be displayed at the Waage Gallery through May 11. Wentz, who began exploring art after retirement, shares her unique approach to storytelling through felting, saying, “Sharing these mediums through exhibits and teaching classes allows others to explore, and perhaps pursue, art through these experiences.”
A joint reception for both artists will be held on Thursday, February 20, from 2-4 p.m. at M State, with an artist talk at 2:30 p.m. The exhibits are free and open to the public during regular campus hours.
