Health officials in Minnesota are reporting a “silent surge” in COVID-19 cases this winter, following a significant lull in activity. The uptick isn’t limited to COVID-19—rates of flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) are also on the rise, with impacts seen across the state, including here in the Detroit Lakes area.
Local health experts urge residents to take simple precautions to help limit the spread of these illnesses. Recommendations include:
• Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds—especially after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, before eating, or after using the restroom.
• Staying home if you feel unwell to protect others.
• Considering seasonal vaccinations, including those for COVID-19 and the flu.
While the term “silent surge” reflects the slower buildup of cases, the increase is a reminder that vigilance is key in keeping our community healthy.
