Red Cross Urges Blood Donations to Prevent Shortages

By Trish Johnson Jan 7, 2025 | 9:14 AM

The American Red Cross is calling on donors to help prevent blood shortages in 2025 by giving blood or platelets this winter.

As the threat of severe winter weather and an active flu season looms, the Red Cross is urging Type O negative blood donors and those able to give platelets to step up. January, being National Blood Donor Month, is a particularly challenging time to collect blood products due to cancellations and illnesses. Those feeling well are encouraged to make and keep donation appointments to help maintain the blood supply.

The Red Cross has also teamed up with the NFL for the sixth year in a row, offering donors who give between Jan. 1-26, 2025, a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LIX. The prize includes game tickets, pre-game activities, airfare, hotel accommodations, and a $1,000 gift card. Visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment and learn more.
