Minnesota’s blackout license plates have surpassed 250,000 sales in their first year, far exceeding expectations and becoming a popular choice for vehicle owners statewide.
The plates, which feature a sleek black background with white lettering, were first introduced on January 1. By the end of the year, Minnesota’s Driver and Vehicle Services Division (DVS) reported selling 256,387 blackout plates, well above the initial estimate of 160,000.
These plates require a minimum $30 annual contribution, which helps fund DVS operations and potentially reduces filing fees for other license plates. According to DVS officials, the plates’ popularity stems from their stylish design, which complements many car colors, especially black and white vehicles.
Other specialty plates introduced in 2024 also saw strong sales, including 3,477 plates supporting the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office. Pro sports team plates were also popular, with the Minnesota Vikings plates selling 5,787 and the Minnesota Wild plates selling 2,305.
In 2025, a new specialty plate for Rotary International is now available, adding to Minnesota’s growing list of more than 120 specialty license plates.
