The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting a sharp rise in norovirus outbreaks this December, with more than 40 cases already confirmed—almost double the usual number for this time of year. Norovirus, also called the “stomach flu,” is highly contagious and causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping.
Ahead of holiday gatherings, health officials are urging Minnesotans to take precautions to prevent the spread of norovirus. Tips include washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoiding food preparation if you’ve been sick in the last three days, and disinfecting surfaces with a household bleach solution.
Norovirus symptoms usually last one to two days and are best managed by staying hydrated. For more information on prevention and treatment, visit the Minnesota Department of Health website.
