Winter Load Increases Has Begun

By Trish Johnson Dec 23, 2024 | 6:29 AM

Winter load increases for unrestricted highways in the Central frost zone begin Monday, December 23rd, at 12:01 a.m., according to MnDOT. During this period, vehicles can operate up to 10 percent over the standard legal maximum loads on unrestricted highways.

However, trucks must still comply with registration weight laws and cannot exceed registered gross weight tolerances. Local agencies, including cities, counties, and townships, should be consulted before increasing weights on their routes. Permits are required for winter weight increases on interstate highways but are not needed for state trunk highways.

Winter load increases are already underway in the North and North-Central frost zones. For more information, including frost zone maps and restrictions, visit mndot.gov/loadlimits.
