MN Officials Warn of Ice Dangers on Aerated Lakes

By Trish Johnson Dec 17, 2024 | 6:34 AM

The Minnesota DNR is reminding everyone to be extra cautious on lakes with aeration systems this winter. These systems, which prevent fish winterkill by creating open water, can also make ice dangerously thin. Look for orange and black warning signs at public accesses and thin ice markers near aerated areas.

This winter, aeration systems will be running on 189 lakes statewide, including some in our region.

DNR Aeration Program Coordinator Denise Elston says it best:

“Ice is never 100% safe, so take extreme care when heading out.”

Impact on DL listeners: If you’re heading out for ice fishing, snowmobiling, or skating, keep an eye out for posted warnings and stay aware of thin ice risks. Safety is key to enjoying the season!
