Snowmobiles in the Safety Spotlight

By Trish Johnson Dec 16, 2024 | 6:43 AM

As the snowmobile season approaches, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding enthusiasts to prepare for the trails.  While the season can officially begin as early as December 1, current conditions have delayed trail openings.

Before trails can open, several conditions must be met:

  • The ground must be frozen. In areas where trails cross wetlands, 15 inches of ice are required to support the weight of trail groomers.
  • Adequate snow cover. Approximately 12 inches of snow is necessary for trail packing and grooming.
  • Trail preparations. This includes clearing fallen trees, installing signs, and opening gates.

In the meantime, the DNR advises snowmobilers to ensure their registrations are current, perform maintenance checks on their machines, review safety training, and consult local trail maps for any updates or new routes.

Registrations for new snowmobiles must be purchased in person at a deputy registrar of motor vehicles or at the DNR License Bureau in St. Paul.  Renewals and state trail passes for out-of-state snowmobiles can be handled in person or online through the DNR’s website.

For the latest information on snow depth and state-managed trail conditions, riders can visit the DNR’s dedicated webpage.

Local trail conditions are often updated by tourism associations, chambers of commerce, and volunteer snowmobile clubs.  To find a nearby club, visit the Minnesota United Snowmobiler’s Association website.

Safety remains a top priority.  The DNR emphasizes the following tips:

  • Be weather aware. Avoid riding in adverse weather conditions.
  • Check trail conditions and forecasts before heading out.
  • Measure ice depth before traversing lakes and rivers. A minimum of 5 to 7 inches of new, clear ice is recommended for snowmobiles.
  • Stay on designated trails to prevent accidents and trespassing violations.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while riding. Alcohol is a factor in more than 60% of fatal snowmobile accidents in Minnesota.
  • Always wear a quality DOT-approved helmet and facemask.

An interactive snowmobile trail map is available on the DNR’s website.  For paper trail maps, contact the DNR Information Center via email at info.dnr@state.mn.us or call 888-646-6367 during business hours.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying informed, snowmobilers can look forward to a safe and enjoyable riding season once conditions permit.
