Gov. Tim Walz Announces $4.5 Million for Law Enforcement Training

Dec 12, 2024 | 6:38 AM

Governor Walz has announced $4.5 million in new funding to support law enforcement training and recruitment across the state.

The funding, part of the Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training grant program passed by the legislature in 2023, will help train 94 candidates to become licensed officers. Candidates will receive an estimated $50,000 each during their training, which includes education at Alexandria Technical Community College or Hennepin Technical College.

“This program helps individuals move into law enforcement without financial strain,” said Walz during Tuesday’s announcement at the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Education Center in Brooklyn Park.

The funding aims to ease officer shortages across Minnesota, with 46 agencies benefiting. Public safety leaders emphasize the importance of hiring quality candidates who reflect their communities.

The initiative is a step toward addressing staffing challenges while ensuring effective and inclusive policing statewide.
