Otter Tail Power Company Expands Solar Energy for a Greener Future

Dec 10, 2024 | 7:03 AM

Otter Tail Power Company is moving toward a more sustainable energy future. With plans to add two major solar facilities, the company aims to boost its renewable energy capacity by 345 megawatts (MW) while keeping electricity reliable and affordable for its customers.

The first project, Solway Solar, will be built near Solway, Minnesota. This 50-MW facility is expected to start operating in 2026 and bring $4.2 million in tax benefits over its 35-year lifespan. And it’s not just about energy—70 construction jobs will be created during the nine-month building period.

Meanwhile, Abercrombie Solar, a 295-MW project in North Dakota, is set to be fully operational by 2028. This larger facility is projected to generate $23.8 million in tax benefits and create 300 jobs during peak construction.

By 2030, Otter Tail Power says 57% of its energy will come from renewable resources like these, ensuring a cleaner and more economical energy supply for the region.

As President Tim Rogelstad put it, “These projects help us meet our customers’ energy needs while keeping costs low and reliability high.”
