A serious head-on collision occurred Thursday evening, Dec. 5, on U.S. Highway 59 near mile marker 244 in Pelican Township, Otter Tail County.
A northbound Toyota RAV4, driven by 28-year-old Mercedes De Los Angeles Morales Mondragon of Pelican Rapids, collided with a southbound Honda Civic, driven by 55-year-old Steven Andrew Kieffer, also of Pelican Rapids.
Morales Mondragon sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Detroit Lakes Hospital. Kieffer suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sanford Hospital. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Local responders, including the Pelican Rapids Police Department, Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, Pelican Rapids Fire, and Ringdahl Ambulance, assisted at the scene. The road was dry at the time of the accident.
The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing to investigate.
