The City of Detroit Lakes Public Works Department is gearing up for a busy December, sharing seasonal updates and helpful tips to keep the community informed and safe.
December Events
The month kicks off with several key meetings and events. The Park Board meets on December 4 at 4:00 PM, followed by a Public Works Open House on December 5 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Other important dates include the Public Works meeting on December 9 at 2:30 PM, the City Council meeting on December 10 at 5:00 PM, and the highly anticipated arrival of the Holiday Train on December 15 at 2:00 PM.
Seasonal Reminders
Public Works reminds residents that snow removal from sidewalks is the responsibility of property owners, per City Code 904. In commercial districts, sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours, while residential areas have a 72-hour timeframe.
City offices will be closed on December 25 and January 1 in observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Icy Driving Tips
With winter weather in full swing, the department is offering practical advice to stay safe on the roads:
- Invest in winter tires.
- Avoid using cruise control.
- Brake gently and drive cautiously.
- Watch for black ice and maintain a safe following distance.
Salt Smart Pledge
To minimize environmental impact, Public Works encourages residents to follow the “Salt Smart Pledge”:
- Shovel – Clear walkways before snow turns to ice.
- Select – Use salt only when temperatures are above 15°F and switch to sand when it’s colder.
- Scatter – Use salt sparingly, aiming for three inches of space between granules.
- Sweep – Reuse leftover salt, sand, or de-icer.
Holiday Wishes
The City extends warm holiday wishes to all, hoping for a joyful season and a peaceful New Year.
