Detroit Lakes High School is adding a new staff member who’s sure to make a big impact—Buddha, an 8-year-old retired detection dog, will take on a new role as a comfort dog next school year.
Approved by the Detroit Lakes School Board, Buddha will offer emotional support to students and staff, building on the success of the middle school’s comfort dog, Comet. Special education teacher Matthew Jenson will serve as Buddha’s handler, and structured interactions will be available.
With nearly 97% of surveyed students and staff in support, Buddha is expected to enhance the school environment, boost attendance, and promote social skills.
