A mental health crisis stabilization unit in Fergus Falls temporarily shut down after a New York Mills man caused extensive damage earlier this week. The incident occurred when 43-year-old James Donald Nelson reportedly became irate, smashing furniture in his room and discharging a fire extinguisher throughout the facility.
Responding officers reported a thick haze of fire extinguisher dust in the air, forcing the unit to close due to health and safety concerns. Staff stated the cleanup, estimated at $2,500, will require professional services.
The facility, part of Productive Alternatives, provides short-term care for adults in mental health crises. They aim to reopen quickly to continue their support for the community.
Nelson remains in custody and faces charges of felony first-degree property damage and misdemeanor assault. He admitted to the outburst, claiming he was upset after being informed of his discharge from the unit.
