A Successful Start to MN Deer Hunting Season

Nov 11, 2024 | 6:51 AM

This past weekend marked the opening of Minnesota’s firearms deer hunting season, with over 400,000 hunters participating statewide.  In the Detroit Lakes area, hunters reported a successful start, attributing favorable conditions to a mild winter and a productive spring, which have bolstered deer populations.

While comprehensive statewide harvest data is still being compiled, early reports indicate a promising season ahead. Notably, a serious incident occurred near Moorhead, where a 34-year-old hunter from Dilworth suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was airlifted to a Fargo hospital.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) emphasizes the importance of safety, reminding hunters to wear blaze orange or pink, clearly identify their target and surroundings, and handle firearms responsibly. Additionally, hunters are encouraged to participate in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling, especially in designated management and surveillance zones, to help monitor and manage deer health.

As the season progresses, hunters are advised to stay informed about local regulations and continue practicing safe hunting habits to ensure a successful and incident-free experience.
